In 1920s Paris, James Joyce struggled to find a publisher for his groundbreaking novel, Ulysses. Enter Sylvia Beach, a Preacher’s kid from New Jersey, and her legendary bookstore, Shakespeare and Co., who took on the challenge. In this course, taught by the author of Such Friends: The Literary 1920s, Vol. III, 1922, explore the vibrant creative context of 1920s Paris and the obstacles faced by writers and publishers introducing innovative works. The third class features an online screening of Left Bank, a new documentary by Lisa Reznik Meyers, which brings these writers and their world to life.
